The Edmonton Oilers have made a pair of coinciding roster moves on Wednesday ahead of their game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The team activated centre Jason Dickinson from injured reserve, while placing Colton Dach on it.

Dickinson, 31, will make his season debut on Wednesday, having missed the pre-season and first three games of the Oilers season as he works his way back from an ankle injury suffered late last season. He had missed the final three regular-season games last year after taking a Connor Murphy shot off his ankle, suffering a fracture. While he dressed for Game 1 of the playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks, he would miss Games 2 and 3, before returning for the final three games of the series.

“If I’m being totally honest, I never quite got to 100 per cent over the summer,” Dickinson said during a scrum Monday.

“I was making jumps, but it felt like every jump I made, I would plateau for a couple of weeks. There was one where I just couldn’t make another jump, so I spent a month trying to figure out what wasn’t working, what I was compensating for, and why I wasn’t getting the reactions I needed out of my ankle. We spent a good month here figuring that out.”

Dach’s injury, meanwhile, comes as somewhat of a surprise as the winger-turned-centre has played in all three Oilers games this season, averaging 13:43 per game. While the injury is unknown, Dach left the Oilers’ Oct. 1 game against the Vancouver Canucks late in the first period after getting hit awkwardly, then roughed, along the boards by defenceman Luke Schenn. Dach was seen reaching at his neck, but returned to complete the game and was in the lineup Saturday against the Seattle Kraken.

To land on the injured reserve, a player must remain out of the lineup for at minimum seven days, which means Dach will miss all three games on the Oilers’ California road trip.
