The Edmonton Oilers acquired centre Filip Hallander from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, sending defenceman Spencer Stastney to Pittsburgh. The trade was announced hours before the Oilers played the Ducks in Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday night. Edmonton is dealing with injuries to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Matthew Savoie, Jason Dickinson and Mattias Janmark.

Hallander, 26, had a goal and two assists in two games with Pittsburgh this season. The six-foot-two, 207-pound forward is from Sundsvall, Sweden, and was selected by the Penguins in the second round, 27th overall, of the 2018 NHL draft. Across 18 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, he has two goals and five assists. He has also recorded 26 goals and 36 assists in 107 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Stastney, 26, is from Woodridge, Ill., and had not played a game this season. The five-foot-11, 196-pound defenceman joined Edmonton from Nashville on Dec. 12 in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick. He scored once in 36 games with the Oilers. Before that trade, he had three goals and 15 assists in 81 games with the Predators.

The Canadian Press report on the trade was first published Oct. 7, 2026.
