More than 3,000 mail-in ballots for Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum have been returned with errors that make them invalid, the province’s election administrator says. With less than two weeks until voting, Elections Alberta says voters can still submit corrected information by email.

Some packages were returned with missing declaration forms, errors on those forms or issues with identification. The referendum will ask Albertans a series of questions, including whether to remain in Canada or begin the process for a second, binding referendum on leaving Confederation.

Elections Alberta has verified about one-third of more than 652,000 ballot packages sent to eligible voters. The province is also continuing to hire extra election staff: more than two-thirds of the 60,000 workers sought have been hired.
