Strathcona County Victim Services and Strathcona RCMP are offering “hug kits” to people who report romance scams, beginning Monday. The kits are intended for victims of fraud involving romantic relationships, including scams beyond those described specifically as romance scams.
Each kit includes a blanket as a gesture of comfort and compassion, information about fraud recovery, and resources and messages of support for survivors. Tom Sutton of Victim Services of Strathcona County RCMP and Enforcement Services said in a news release: “Sometimes the most meaningful support is a simple gesture. Offering a comfort item, like a blanket, can help someone feel safe and cared for during an incredibly difficult time,”
“For some victims, it may help ease anxiety and provide comfort when they feel isolated, vulnerable and ashamed,” Sutton said.
Mounties say Strathcona County residents reported losing $265,000 to romance schemes this year through Sept. 23. Such scams often go unreported because victims may feel embarrassed or may not realize they have been defrauded.
People who believe they have been victimized are advised to contact their local police and bank as soon as possible. County residents can report a romance scam by calling the Strathcona RCMP non-emergency line at 780-467-7741 or visiting the detachment in person.
