B.C. RCMP are seeking witnesses and dash-camera footage as they investigate a fatal crash on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park. Police are looking into whether the driver and passenger had been at a liquor establishment in Banff, Alta., before the collision.
Members of the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment were called shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, to the single-vehicle crash. Officers found a black Nissan Maxima on its side after it left the highway and travelled down an embankment, just north of the Floe Lake trailhead.
A 23-year-old passenger from Invermere, B.C., died. The female driver was not seriously injured. Sgt. Brett Reiben said police have not ruled out factors that may have contributed to the collision.
“Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision and have not ruled out any factors that may have contributed to it,” Reiben said. He said investigators believe people may have stopped at the crash scene, witnessed events beforehand or seen how the vehicle was being driven, but have not yet spoken with police.
RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash-camera footage of the black Nissan Maxima in the hours before the crash to contact B.C. Highway Patrol Cranbrook at 250-420-4244. Investigators are also seeking footage that could show possible visits to restaurants or bars in Banff.
