Edmonton is expected to see several more mild days before a marked shift brings cooler temperatures, rain and possible wet snow to parts of Alberta during the Thanksgiving long weekend. Monday’s high is forecast to reach 19 C, followed by highs of 17 C Tuesday and 16 C Wednesday. The weekend outlook remains uncertain as a low-pressure system develops and moves across the province.
Monday is forecast to begin mainly sunny, with clouds arriving in the afternoon as low pressure crosses northern Alberta. Scattered showers are possible in Edmonton and nearby areas, while most precipitation is expected in northeastern Alberta. Winds should strengthen through the day, with west winds gusting to 40 km/h around midday and in the afternoon, then easing overnight.
Tuesday will start with clouds and a slight chance of a shower before skies clear later in the afternoon. Winds are forecast to rise again, reaching 20 km/h with gusts to 40 km/h. The morning low is expected to be 4 C, with an afternoon high of 17 C.
Partly cloudy skies and a morning low of 3 C are forecast for Wednesday, when the high should reach 16 C. Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a low of 5 C, a high of 13 C and a 30 per cent chance of evening showers. Those days remain within the current warm spell, before cooler air begins moving in aloft.
An upper-level trough is expected to sweep across Alberta Friday and Saturday, while a strong surface low is forecast to develop and move into western Alberta early Friday. The system’s precise development location remains uncertain, and that will affect where heavier rain falls. Current projections call for showers or periods of rain in Edmonton Friday, with heavier precipitation north of the city, from the Peace Country through Slave Lake and east towards Bonnyville.
If the low develops farther south, Edmonton could instead see steadier rain Friday. Colder air pulled in behind the system, combined with colder air associated with the upper trough, is expected to bring snow to mountain parks and parts of western Alberta Friday and Saturday. Wet snow is also possible in Edmonton early Saturday, and gusty winds are expected both days.
The forecast for Edmonton calls for mostly cloudy skies Friday, a 40 per cent chance of showers, windy conditions, a morning low of 5 C and a high of 11 C. Saturday is forecast to be mostly cloudy and windy, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of a rain-and-snow mix. The low is expected to be 2 C and the high 5 C.
The broader outlook describes Friday highs around 10 to 12 C, about 5 C Saturday and highs from 7 to 12 C Sunday and Monday in Edmonton. Those temperatures and precipitation details could change as the weather pattern takes shape over the coming week. The expected shift would bring a chilly start to the long weekend after the stretch of mild conditions.
