A four-vehicle crash on Highway 2 northwest of Wetaskiwin struck an Alberta Sheriff’s cruiser during a traffic stop Saturday, closing the highway’s northbound lanes for several hours. RCMP said the crash was reported at about 12:30 p.m. near the overpass at Highway 616.

The cruiser was stopped in the left lane after the Sheriff pulled over a driver when another vehicle travelling on the highway rear-ended it, RCMP said. Two other vehicles on the highway were then hit. The vehicle that had been pulled over was not involved in the collision.

The Sheriff was inside the cruiser when it was struck. RCMP said only minor injuries were reported in the crash. On Monday, Mounties said their investigation was ongoing.
