John Hutzcal, 95, rode a motorcycle again after a community of bikers came together to give him another trip, decades after a crash that cost him his leg forced him to retire. The ride took place with a sidecar, an opportunity arranged with help from the Alberta Motorcycle Safety Association and his retirement home, Chartwell Griesbach.
Hutzcal had spoken about riding bikes to the home’s general manager, Stephen Blackie, when they first met. Blackie said the home had spent a couple of years looking for a way to get Hutzcal back on a motorcycle, and staff were excited for him to experience the joy of riding.
“I used to enjoy it, but now I can’t,” Hutzcal said. Before the ride, he said: “I was hoping I’d get to ride, and now I’ll get to ride.”
Biker Adam Waters said the group was eager to help. “Any time we get a chance to do something good, we definitely jump on the wagon,” he said. “Let’s see what we can do for him.” The chance to ride in a sidecar offered a way for Hutzcal to return to the activity after his crash-related retirement. The report included files from CTV News Edmonton’s Noah Rishaug.
